I'm Derek Deng, and I'm currently the Associate Content Editor at Byrdie. That means everything from road-testing Pat McGrath’s glass skin mask to enrolling in Korean beauty school to reporting on beauty's most innovative launches.

My peers like to call me to the tasteful twink, which is to say: I bring a very specific lens to the beauty space. One that’s curious, culturally fluent, and always thinking a little too hard about the relationship between fragrance and identity.

I’m fascinated by the way that social media doesn’t just reflect culture; it drives it. As an editor, I tap into my perspective as a content creator to unpack the trends and storylines that travel from feed to culture—and as a content creator, I lean on my editorial lens to cut through the noise with an authoritative point of view.

Beauty is a living archive of politics, performance, and desire— who we are and who we want to be. As a gay, Taiwanese-American beauty editor, I’ve made it my mission to amplify underrepresented voices and expand the conversation around who gets to be seen, heard, and celebrated in this space.
